World's Largest Calf Fry & Cook Off
Vinita’s Calf Fry Festival and Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo Teaming Up for August Event
How's your sense of adventure?
So your wondering what's a calf fry? Well imagine if you will, a calf who is not going to be a bull. To accomplish this parts must be removed. Get the picture?
With our rich ranching heritage it is no wonder we would have an event like this. The Calf Fry Festival was started in 1979 by three local ranchers. Jim Shelton, Dr. John Myers and Larry Green. This event takes place every year and is sponsored by the Vinita Area Chamber of Commerce. Many local business' and civic groups participate in the cook off part of the event. Visitors who want to partake of this local "delicacy" purchase tickets to enter the cooking area and sample the tasty fries served up by very enthusiastic teams. Judges determine many of the awards with one special award given called the Peoples Choice Award. Other foods that are served and judged are beans, cobblers, salsa and breads.
Don't worry if calf fries are not for you. This event is way more than a food tasting event. There are crafts, kids games, baseball tournament, cowboy games, large inflatables for the kids and the evening finishes off with The Will Rogers Memorial Rodeo.
You will want to fit this event into your schedule, it really is a taste of the country. Check out the Big Country Weekend website for more information.
